SUMMARY:Y-OTIS & Nothing Causes Anything - DE/SEMBLE Festival
DESCRIPTION:TWO CONCERTS: Y-OTIS & Nothing Causes Anything DE/SEMBLE 2025 Thursday\, October 9\, 2025FLUCC DECK\nNothing Causes Anything (AT) This year’s DE/SEMBLE Festival opens with a special performance by Austrian Jazz Award Winner\, Yvonne Moriel. We are thrilled that she has chosen to present the new project\, “nothing causes anything\,” to kick off the festival. Prepare to be captivated.\nVincent Pongrácz\, Yvonne Moriel & Alex Kranabetter first crossed paths at Synesthetic Wednesday\, performing together in a free-form quartet set.Their sound? Experimental Noise Jazz — bound by free improvisation\, full of twists\, collisions\, and unexpected harmony. Despite their different musical roots\, they share attentiveness\, improvisational sensitivity & the courage to embrace chaos — always reshaping into something new.For this concert\, they are joined on drums by Lukas König.\nYvonne Moriel – SaxophoneAlex Kranabetter – Trumpet\, ElectronicsVincent Pongrácz – Bass Clarinet\, fxLukas König – Drums\n\nY-OTIS (SE/UK/DE) Otis Sandsjö – the visionary saxophonist and driving force behind Y-OTIS – crafts a unique\, genre-defying sound that he calls “liquid jazz.” Originally from Sweden and now based in Berlin\, Otis merges jazz with elements of hip-hop\, electronica\, and experimental groove to create rich\, immersive soundscapes.\nFollowing his acclaimed self-titled debut in 2018\, he released Y-OTIS 2 and Y-OTIS TRE via the renowned Helsinki-based label We Jazz Records\, with production by Koma Saxo’s Petter Eldh. Otis’s music has been described as an “audio mosaic\,” blending hypnotic saxophone lines\, fragmented rhythms\, and funk-infused beats into a fluid\, forward-looking sonic experience.\nOtis Sandsjö (saxophone) Petter Eldh (bass & synths) Dan Nicholls (keys & synths) Jamie Peet (drums)\n\nDE/SEMBLE Festival October 9-12\, 2025Vienna\, Austria\nTickets: EUR24 https://kupfticket.com/en/events/desemble-festival-2025Photo Y-OTIS by Maria Sécio & Sebastian SteinsPhoto Nothing Causes Anything (c) Nothing Causes AnythingPhoto Lukas König (c) Rania Moslam

SUMMARY:Insel Broetz Festival für Freie Musik
DESCRIPTION:Farida Amadou / Kaja Draksler / Gunda Gottschalk / Achim Kaufmann / Jelena Kuljič / Almut Kühne / Robert Landfermann / Christian Lillinger / Dominik Mahnig / Bart Maris / Matthias Müller / Kathrin Pechlof / John-Dennis Renken / Jan Roder / Johannnes Schleiermacher / Wolfgang Schmidtke / Aki Takase / Kazuhisa Uchiashi / Els Vandeweye \nCurated by Wolfgang Schmidtke\nOn June 22\, 2023\, saxophonist and clarinettist Peter Brötzmann passed away. Two years earlier\, on the occasion of his eightieth birthday\, the INSEL in Wuppertal had organized a three-day festival with international guests – BROEtz 80! – which celebrated the outstanding status of this exceptional artist. The musicians and the audience literally came from all over the world to celebrate these three days in our jazz city. \nIn the aftermath\, Peter Brötzmann and I decided to further develop the unique program concept and establish a biennial international festival for free music. A festival that does not invite ensembles that are currently playing in clubs and halls up and down the country\, but artists who have something new and unusual\, sometimes disturbing\, in their playing. With BROEtz 23!\, which Peter Brötzmann helped to prepare\, it finally became clear that the unique significance he has achieved in the international jazz world is a Wuppertal specialty\, the continuation of which we absolutely want to ensure – through a festival program with an absolutely uncompromising\, forward-looking artistic vision. \nThe idea of free music would lead itself ad absurdum if we stuck to the traditional “sounds like whoopataal”. BROEtz 2025 presents musicians who stand for fresh\, innovative\, unheard paths of improvisation. Where others discover that a certain band\, a certain album\, a stylistic niche is particularly easy to market commercially\, we – in the spirit of Peter Brötzmann – consistently search for new musical concepts and bring them – sometimes for the first time together – to our stage! \n  \n

SUMMARY:Butoh Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Molecular dance\nAll cells in our body consist of atoms bonded together. These bonds are in perpetual transformation\, change\, break\, rejoin\, in an eternal dance\, made possible by space and energy. Human existence relies on connections and exchanges too. To understand these connections\, we need space and silence\, allowing us to sense life’s dance. \nThis workshop explores innovative ways to create personal movement\, emphasizing the spaces and stillness between movements within our bodies. Guided explorations with concrete and abstract imagery help us discover new interactions with inner and outer space and the others. The silence between movements is the door opener of new possibilities. \nEach individual is a beautiful and unique form of life\, interconnected with everything. Let’s discover our unique qualities and movements and share them as gifts with others\, strengthening the ties that unite us \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMARUSKA RONCHI\nGraduated in Contemporary Dance\, she met Butoh in 2009 with Atsushi Takenouchi. She studied with him for 14 year becoming his assistant in the Butoh School in Italy where she could practice deeply\, learning and teaching. She met other important butoh master as Yumiko Yoshioka\, Yoshito Ohno\, Minako Seki\, Seisaku\, Carlotta Ikeda\, Ima Tenko\, Natsu Nakajima\,Semimaru (Sankai Yuku) Imre Tohrman\, Masaki Iwana\, among others. Her research is an alchemical process which seeks physical and spiritual transmutation in the matter of the body.\nInvestigating not only the movement but also the stillness\, the void\, the silence\, and the space in between. She travels around the world sharing her dance and practices through performances and workshops\, and collaboration with international artists. She presents her works all over the world\, in Canada\, Japan\, Mauritius\, and many countries in Europe.

SUMMARY:Yazz Ahmed Quartet -DE/SEMBLE Festival
DESCRIPTION:A perfect Friday night with Yazz Ahmed’s new album: multi-melodic\, layered\, somewhere between jazz mastery and ambient mysticism. The brilliant British-Bahraini musician presents her latest work\, “A Paradise in the Hold\,” at DE/SEMBLE.\nThe album’s roots go back to 2014\, when a journey to her former home in Bahrain led her to rediscover the musical traditions of her childhood — from wedding songs and women’s drum circles to the mystical chants of the pearl divers (Fijiri).“I was able to dive deeper into the music I grew up with\,” Ahmed says\, “music I never really appreciated as a child.”\nBorn in Bahrain and raised in the UK from the age of nine\, Ahmed initially felt compelled to hide her background due to the stereotyping of Arab identity in the West. It was only through her path as a musician that she reconnected with the beauty of her heritage — and now channels it into music that’s both deeply personal and universally resonant.\nYazz Ahmed (trumpet\, flugelhorn)Ralph Wyld (vibraphone)Dave Manington (bass)Rod Youngs (drums)\nDE/SEMBLE Festival October 9–12\, 2025\nRadioKulturhaus\, Studio 3 Vienna\, Austria\nTickets 24EUR: https://radiokulturhaus.orf.at/…/720900/Yazz-Ahmed-QuartetIn cooperation with Radiokulturhaus.

DESCRIPTION:Neither kinky parties nor Beyoncé have succeeded in cracking the hard core of the millennia-old Roman Catholic tradition—a tradition that continually legitimises itself through the repeated performance of rituals. A tradition that systematically excludes\, among others\, women and queers. But now we say: enough with the Vatican – it’s time to open the Muttikan.\nMUTTIKAN appropriates the Roman Catholic Mass as a performative format and develops a secular counter-model to it. SUMMARY:Park Jiha - DE/SEMBLE Festival
DESCRIPTION:Park Jiha (KR) – DE/SEMBLE 2025Sunday\, October 12\, 2025 (Afternoon Concert) Reaktor (Geblergasse 40\, 1170)\nSouth Korean composer Park Jiha deftly balances heritage and improvisation\, disrupting traditional paradigms and breathing new life into ancient instruments. Moving beyond her formal training\, she reimagines the Yanggeum (a hammered dulcimer)\, Saenghwang (a free reed mouth organ)\, and Piri (a double-reed bamboo oboe) to create an innovative form of minimalism. Her era-ambiguous elegies fluctuate between deeply meditative and dramatically dynamic\, emerging as an ever-present prophecy of tomorrow.\nDebuting as a soloist with Communion in 2018\, Jiha refined her craft with Philos (2019) and The Gleam (2022). Vigorously exploring new creative pathways\, her voiceless soundscapes found discordant harmony in a wildcard collaboration with Scouse poet Roy Claire Potter\, recorded for BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction in 2022 and released by Café Oto’s Otoroku imprint. In her first foray into film scoring\, she applied her cinematic sensibilities to Garth Davis’ cli-fi psychological thriller Foe (2023\, Amazon Studios)\, soundtracking the dying earth to contrast Oliver Coates’ parallel and intersecting contributions.\nJiha has now released and started touring her new album All Living Things (Feb. 2025)\, an ode to living beings via Tak:til / Glitterbeat.\nIn cooperation with Korea Kulturzentrum / K_on_temporary.\nDE/SEMBLE FestivalOctober 9-12\, 2025Vienna\, Austria\nTickets: 18 EUR https://kupfticket.com/en/events/desemble-festival-2025

Catholic rituals and liturgical choreographies are translated on three interconnected levels: ritual-symbolic\, content-based\, and spatial-choreographic. \nBY & WITH:\nLinda Lou Dierich-Matzke\, Marco Merenda [Concept\, artistic direction\, choreography\, performance\, dramaturgy]\nChristopher Ramm [Sound\, performance\, dramaturgy]\nCarolina Burandt & Anastasia Kriwoscheja [Stage design & visuals]\nSteve Leander Oelmann [Costume]\nDoria Worden [Light design]\nNathalie Giele\, Su Jin Kim [Mentoring dramaturgy & choreography]\nKerstin Henky [Production]\nLorenz Vetter [Photography and graphic arts]\nMade possible through the „Wiederaufnahme- und Gastspielförderung“ provided by the Dachverbands freie darstellende Künste Hamburg with the support of Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg\, Behörde für Kultur und Medien.

SUMMARY:Blumer & Dell & Geisser & Morgenthaler | Guilio Stermieri
\nGiulio Stermieri – Farfisa organ\, toy piano\, sampler \nGiulio Stermieri is a pianist\, keyboard player\, and composer. His musical path merges his love for the African American piano tradition and improvisation with a focus on timbral exploration of piano and electronics. His work honors the present moment as the privileged dimension for an artist-listener communication. He also explores the way musical material affects form\, following the instant composing utopia. Fort Da\, Stermieri’s solo performance\, is rooted in these beliefs; the Farfisa organ and the sampler become a living machine\, together suggesting new creative trajectories. Fragmented melodies appear and disappear\, rising from the contemplation of simple sonic stratifications or sinking into polyrhythmic trance\, revealing a game in which we can experience the symbolic value of repetition.

SUMMARY:shut up and listen! 2025: PAST_20 → NEXT_∞ Transdisziplinäres Festival für Musik und Klangkunst
DESCRIPTION:Donnerstag\, 16. bis Samstag\, 18. Oktober 2025: echoraum (1150 Wien) sowie Livestreaming Sonntag\, 19. bis Samstag\, 25. Oktober 2025: SP•CE (\, 1190 Wien) \nIn Kooperation mit sp·ce – Verein zur Förderung von Kunst und Transdisziplinarität \nIn 2025\, the transdisciplinary festival shut up and listen! will celebrate its twentieth anniversary with a particularly extensive anniversary edition. Under the artistic direction of composer and curator Belma Bešlić-Gál\, the title PAST_20 → NEXT_∞ unfolds a transgressive structure between archive and speculation\, memory and still-unheard spaces of possibility. The festival once again transcends the character of a mere concert series and moves through time as a resonant space\, unfolding both backward and forward. In addition to the established echoraum venue\, the SP•CE audio gallery will also be used in 2025 – an addition that should be understood not only as a physical expansion but also as a conceptual extension. Since the COVID-19 pandemic\, a large portion of the performative contributions have been presented both via livestreaming and in the tried-and-tested format of collective experience on site. \nAcross nine festival days\, sual! connects the festival’s diverse audiences. 2025 will feature concerts\, performances\, audiovisual works\, sound installations\, and exhibition contributions within an open structure in which historical positions not only engage in dialogue with new works\, but also challenge each other. The media archive SUAL ARCHIVES #20 documents interdisciplinary diversity through selected artistic contributions from 20 festival editions. \nsual! 2025 includes twelve performative contributions\, including numerous premieres and new works by Petra Sandner\, an installation by Kolektiv ПROSTORЪ\, and discursive formats. The SP•CE listening gallery will present a multi-channel listening room and a comprehensive media archive with contributions from 20 festival years\, as well as a new quadraphonic sound installation by Berlin-based composer-performer Kai Fagaschinski\, created as part of the artistic research project AUDIO GHOSTS. \nThe musical program expands the concept of composition toward processual\, intermedial\, and auditory-theatrical formats. The opening at echoraum brings together works by Gertrude Moser-Wagner | Ulrich Kaufman and Radu Malfatti\, and the Ensemble Zimt (extended) featuring Franz Hautzinger create sonic structures that oscillate between reduction\, micro-interventions\, and condensation. The second day of the festival is dedicated to current developments in the post-Yugoslav space\, featuring an electroacoustic performance by Svetlana Maraš\, a lecture by Damjan Jovičin on sound and social engagement in Belgrade\, and a collective sound action by the formation metacounterpoint. The festival continues with a sound projection by noid and performances by Ensemble echo_von_nichts and Manuel Pessoa de Lima\, which explore the boundaries of sound\, language\, and body as semiotic carrier structures. \nWith the relocation to the SP•CE listening gallery\, the focus shifts from performance to space-related sound research. In addition to Kai Fagaschinski’s premiere of a sound installation for a virtual clarinet quartet\, the multi-channel listening space SHUT UP AND LISTEN! 2006-2025 forms an immersive acoustic topology of the festival’s history. \nshut up and listen! 2025 is not a retrospective look back\, but rather a dynamic reconstruction of temporality through sound – a festival that sees itself not as a closed edition\, but as an open resonance structure across time. \nBelma Bešlić-Gál\, Artistic Director

SUMMARY:Impro-Session im Garten: Tashi Dorji (US) & Lukas Koenig Duo und Eric Arn (Solo)
Eric lebt schon a Zeitlang in Wien und bastelt an seinen ganz eigenen Soundwelten. Irgendwo zwischen psychedelisch\, spacig und völlig frei. Er lässt die Gitarre knurren\, singen\, brummen – manchmal ruhig\, manchmal laut\, immer ehrlich.\nericarn.bandcamp.com
