Wie seine Vorgänger John Fahey\, Peter Walker und Robbie Basho verbindet er meisterhaft östliche und westliche Einflüsse und verwebt Ragas\, Rags und die gefühlvollen Klänge der Appalachen miteinander. Josephs musikalisches Spektrum geht über die Akustikgitarre hinaus und umfasst auch das Harmonium\, das Banjo und andere Folkinstrumente\, um eine vielfältige Klangpalette zu schaffen. Allreds neuestes (und 23.!) Album\, Old Time Fantasias (Scissor Tail Records)\, ist weder radiotauglicher Folk des späten 20. Jahrhunderts noch traditioneller Folk aus dem ländlichen Tennessee. Die elektronische Begleitmusik wurde gemeinsam mit Michael Potter (The Electric Nature) arrangiert.
